This residue is a natural, non-toxic, plant-based resin softener that keeps the balls soft. To remove the residue, clean balls using a rag soaked with a solution of Dawn dishwashing soap and warm water. If the ball is very oily, use rubbing alcohol. Hand sanitizer may be substituted if rubbing alcohol is not available.
